Highlands Pass is surrounded on three sides by the Nantahala National Forest. The Nantahala National Forest is the largest in North Carolina with over a half million acres.
Nantahala is the Indian word meaning “land of the noonday sun,” which is an apt description as the peaks, ridges and higher elevations are washed with brilliant sun throughout the day.
